An Energy Based Coefficient of Restitution for Planar Impacts of Slender Bars with Massive External Surfaces∗

چکیده
A new method to solve the collision problems of slender bars with massive external surfaces is developed. The proposed solution accounts for the effect of impact induced vibrations and multiple collisions on the post collision velocities of the impacting members. The approach is based on representing the vibrational energy of the bars during the collision process in terms of a non-dimensional parameter, termed the elastic energy percentile. The elastic energy percentile is expressed as a simple scalar function of the drop angle and a nondimensional parameter, which encapsulates the bar geometry, material, and the stiffness of the contact surface. The elastic energy percentile is then used to develop a new momentum based solution method. The method relies on a revised energetic coefficient of restitution that resolves the effect of impact induced vibrations on the post collision velocities of the impacting bars. The assumptions used in the theoretical development and the outcomes predicted by the proposed ∗This article has appeared in the December 1998 issue of ASME Journal of Applied Mechanics, Vol. 65, No.4, pp. 952-962

A Critical Study of the Applicability of Rigid Body Collision Theory ∗
This article deals with the collision of steel bars with external surfaces. The central issue of the article is the investigation of the fundamental concepts that are used to solve collision problems by using rigid body theory. We particularly focus on low velocity impacts of relatively rigid steel bars to test the applicability of these concepts. An experimental analysis was conducted to study...
متن کاملRigid Body Collisions of Planar Kinematic Chains With Multiple Contact Points
This article deals with the rigid body collisions of planar, kinematic chains with an external surface while in contact with other surfaces. Two solution procedures that cast the impact equations in differential and algebraic forms are developed to solve the general problem. The differential formulation can be used to obtain three sets of solutions based on the kinematic, kinetic, and the energ...
متن کاملAnomalous behavior of normal kinematic restitution in the oblique impacts of a hard sphere on an elastoplastic plate.
We observe oblique impacts of a hard aluminum oxide sphere on a thick elastoplastic polycarbonate plate by recording stroboscopic photographs of the sphere trajectory and spin. The apparent kinematic coefficient of normal restitution grows monotonically with the magnitude of the tangent of the angle of incidence, and the apparent coefficient of friction decreases with increasing normal impact v...
متن کاملExperimental Studies on the Normal Impact of Fly Ash Particles with Planar Surfaces
This paper presents the results of a comprehensive program of experiments in which fly ash particles were impacted under controlled conditions against a flat steel surface. The overall aim of these experiments was to gain an understanding of the ash deposition process in a pulverized coal boiler system. A continuous nitrogen flow carrying fly ash particles was used to examine the effect of part...
متن کاملThe Analytic Technique and Experimental Research Methods of Post-buckling about Slender Rod Strings in Wellbore
The buckling behavior of rod strings in wellbore is one of the key issues in petroleum engineering. The slender rod strings in vertical wellbore were selected as research objects. Based on the energy method, the critical load formulas of sinusoidal and helical buckling were derived for the string with the bottom of the wellbore pressure. According to the sinusoidal and helical buckling’s geomet...
